Making Place PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Rhys Evans is a Cultural Geographer by training and retains a strong intellectual interest in how Place, and the places which we inhabit, come to be.  It is clear that the production of place involves more than just environment, more than just society.  Rather it is the multiple intersections of both from which what we understand as place emerges.

This process, which I call the Production of Place after Henri Lefebvre’s great work “The Production of Space” (1991*) remains at the heart of my intellectual agenda.  I have looked at the production of a number of individual spaces through this lens.   These include:

Rural Spaces in the UK:
“Replacing the countryside:  identity, landscape and the new English countryside”  (PhD Thesis, University of Bristol)

Spaces of mobility:
“Lookin’ At The World Through A Windshield, Watchin’ It Fly By Me On The Right©”: motion, time and vision seen from the driver’s seat.”

Spaces on the margins:
“Paradise On the Margins or Paradise Lost?  Tolerance, permissiveness and conflict on Wreck Beach.”

Spaces of Community Development:
“The Virtuous Forest: discursive interventions in Community Woodlands Trusts in Scotland”
